Toy Story 2 review

It is time for me to get to the review of the second Toy Story that I have on VHS tape. I hope that you do not get too tired of seeing these random posts for the future and that they appear at good enough times in the future. Now, let’s get to the first sequel in the Toy Story series.

We begin in Sector 4 of the Gamma Quadrant in space. Buzz Lightyear is flying into a planet that is said to be where Zerg’s fortress is. A bunch of enemies surround him, but a quick laser to a rock of some sort is able to get them all to explode. Buzz is then seen by a camera which he destroys before being he is dropped down into the fortress.

While there, a row of spiked pointy things come after him and attack him. He is able to outrun them and just before it closes in on him and could have crushed him to death. He carefully goes across floating platforms that end up fall down halfway through. But he uses his anti-gravity device to float above the area and goes to Zerg’s power source. But there is an issue as the power source is a hologram. This is when Zerg himself appears and the two fight. Zerg is able to blast Buzz to death.

This is then revealed to be a video game that Rex was playing while Buzz watched him. Rex is upset that he can’t defeat Zerg. Meanwhile, Woody is looking for his missing hat and we are shown a lot of the old characters from before while being introduced to Mrs. Potato Head for the first time. Slinky Dog has the hat which he found from the dog.

Andy is set to leave for cowboy camp and Woody is planning to go with him. However, a last minute play through with his toys leads to Woody’s arm getting ripped. Woody is then put on the shelf while Andy goes off to camp by himself.

Woody has a nightmare about Andy throwing him out. That’s when he notices a toy named Wheezy up on the shelf. Wheezy was put up there after his squeaker broke and gathered dust, making him unable to call for help. Wheezy points out that a yard sale is going on which leads to panic among the toys. The only one that is taken there is Wheezy, but Woody goes after him with the dog in order to rescue him. While Wheezy is rescued, Woody is taken by a man at the sale. Buzz chases after him and tries to save him, but the car that the man is in speeds off without him. Woody is taken to where that man lives.

The rest of the toys do research into what might have happened and who might have taken Woody. They learn that Al, a man who wears a chicken costume who owns Al’s toy barn, is the person who has taken Woody away.

Meanwhile, Woody tries to escape the new place where he’s at when an angry Al leaves across the road to do a commercial at his store. He is greeted by other toys and learns more of Woody’s Round-Up. The other toys are Jane, a horse named Bull’s-eye, and The Prospector who is still in his box. There is a lot of merchandise relating to Woody that Al has around.

Back at Andy’s house, some of the other toys learn where Al’s Toy Barn is located at and Buzz launches a group of them to go out and rescue him. Mr. Potato Head, Rex, Ham, and Slinky Dog are the toys who join him on this quest.

While watching an episode of Woody’s Round-Up, Woody learns that the show was cancelled due to the interest in space that people developed. He plays with some of the merchandise relating to him until he learns that the whole collection of them is planning to be sold to a museum in Japan. The other toys are then shocked to learn that he still has an owner and need him to avoid staying in storage.

Al plans to take pictures of his collection while he carelessly takes Woody there and his arm falls off as a result. He then calls a person who plans to fix Woody first thing in the morning. Woody freaks out over this, but doesn’t get much sympathy from Jane since he is planning to go away.

The rest of the toys on the rescue mission continue on their way to Woody and where they think he is. Buzz seems to be the most determined of the group going forward. He brings up events of the previous movie as why he feels that he owes Woody this favor.

While Al rests at night, Woody tries to get his missing arm back and has to carefully go across a bunch of cheetos that are on the ground. Bull’s-eye tries to help, but a TV is turned out which causes Al to wake up. Woody notices that the remote is next to Jessie as Al leaves with his arm. Woody and Jane then get into a fight. The Prospector breaks up the fight. I think that Woody references the movie The Best Years of Our Lives when he says, “If I only had both of my arms.”

The toys make it to a busy road that they have to cross. They hide in cones and somehow able to see what is going on. They cause a ton of accidents doing this as the traffic backs up for a while. But we are reminded that Woody isn’t at the toy barn. The cleaner then shows up at Al’s place and fixes Woody while this is happening. Despite the toy store being closed, the other toys are able to get in when they notice another person in the store. The cleaner then fixes up Woody, putting his arm back on and making him look better in many other ways. He looks like he’s new.

Buzz sees a row of other Buzz toys and notices a belt on another one. But this one wakes up and thinks that Buzz a is breaking protocol by being awake, leading to the two of them fighting. Buzz b then ties up Buzz a in a seemingly empty box that must have been around somewhere.

The rest of the toys get a toy car and pick up a tour guide Barbie. They then see Buzz b, mistaking him for the one that they really know. Buzz a sees this and tries to tell them that they have the wrong Buzz. Buzz b is intrigued by Rex who knows how to defeat Zerg due to having a guide for a bit.

Woody is prepared to leave, but then learns more of what happened to Jessie in her past. She tells the story of her old owner and the bond that they used to have. But then this girl started to grow up and she was left under the bed for a while. At least this wasn’t a washing machine where he became evil where she makes a time machine to save her past self and turn her evil. Jesse was donated away which lead to her heartbreak over Emily, her old owner who might have forgotten Jessie. The Prospector is then able to convince Woody to stay with the rest of the Round-Up game.

The main toys gather in what appear to be Al’s office. He then arrives and faxes photos of Woody and the other toys notice this. They jump in his bag. Buzz a was able to escape during the meantime and he chases after the rest of the toys. He sees where Al went and knocks over toys to chase after them. This leads to a Zerg chasing after him.

While the bag is left behind in the car, others are able to see where he went when they are able to get out of the car themselves. They get into the air ducts since Rex knew where to go from the guide and Buzz b thought that it made the most sense to continue that way. He finds where to go and somehow is able to pull out things that he somehow had (perhaps in hammer space) when he starts climbing the structure in order to find Al. Buzz a is able to find out where they are going. Buzz b gets confused about his powers and is only able to continue due to the elevator happening to going to the right place. And Buzz a is somehow able to follow beneath the elevator.

Woody plays with the rest of the Round-Up gain when the others arrive and mistake some of what is going on for torture. Buzz a then catches up with them and he is able to show that he is Andy’s toy while he figures out a solution and explanation for Buzz b. Woody wants to go to the museum and the others decide to leave without him since they don’t think they can convince him to change.

After watching more of the tape, Woody is inspired to stay with them. He wants the rest of the people in the Round-Up gang to go with him. The Prospector, Stinky Pete, traps Woody there when he leaves his box and Woody realizes that Pete was the person who turned on the TV. Al gathers all four toys that he needs while the rest of them head to the elevator. Zerg is there attacking people. It is mostly a fight with him and Buzz b going on while the rest of the toys try to rescue Woody. Zerg reveals that he is the father of Buzz before Rex accidently knocks Zerg over. He is proud for defeating Zerg.

Al leaves in his car and Zerg is revealed to be okay while Buzz b decides to play with him and leaves the rest of the toys to follow him hijacking a Pizza Planet trust. A group of three aliens are there and help them operate the car. Mr. Potato Head saves them from falling out of the car and they feel glad that he was able to save their lives.

When they reach the airport, Al decides that his precious toy cargo shouldn’t be a carry on and puts it in with the regular luggage. He doesn’t seem to have a regular suitcase, but maybe he did and I did not end up seeing it. The toys find themselves in an elaborate maze like area with all of the luggage going in all of these different areas. The toys chase after two different boxes, both thinking that they are the right one to get. Some of them get cameras while Buzz finds Woody. Pete injuries his same arm, causing a tear in a way similar to what Andy had accidently done to him.

The rest of the toys blind Pete with flashes and send him on his way where his new owner is an artist named Amy. This distraction causes them to lose track of what happened to Jane for a while. But they are able to follow her to where her flight is. They are almost prevented from leaving, but Woody and Jessie are able to reenact the ending to the show that they never saw the end of since it never aired and are able to escape as a result. The toys hijack one of the airports vehicles and use it to get back to Andy’s house he notices the new toys and his mother somehow doesn’t find anything strange about this. Woody’s arm is then fixed again while it is revealed that Buzz has a thing for Jessie. Wheezy has his squeaker replaced in the meantime. Woody thinks that his time with Andy will be good as it lasts.

A part of the film around this part makes little to no sense and I felt like complaining about it now. You see, one of the toys in the film sees Al in a commercial. He is visibly upset about things. This is meant to serve as a closing arc to this character. But this character should still be on his way to Japan and yet is back in this country. Plus, the thought of them filming and doing a commercial in the state he was in doesn’t make a lick of sense either. If this were a news story with him upset, then it would make more sense to me. Otherwise, it doesn’t seem like it should be in the film at all. Are they honestly expecting us to think that in a very short amount of time, he made it all the way to Japan, realized his toys were missing, went back to the US, and filmed a commercial where he’s upset all in less than a day?

The credits have sort of made up bloopers going on reminding us of what has gone on previously in the movie before. I kind of miss the bloopers that they used to put in these movies, but they felt that they had done all they could with them which lead to them discontinuing it. That’s according to what those who did the commentary for Finding Nemo said. At least they can do some sort of creative credits in a different way in the future.

Well, that it for this movie. I feel like there was some problems with what they taught us with it as it did seem like they wanted us to hold on to our childhood as long as possible. It made me not want to give away my toys when I had outgrown them. But that’s what the next movie is for.

That’s it for this blog post. I guess we’ll see when the next post will be in the future. But these random posts do come at random times randomly, which is their point. I’ll be back some time with my review of the third Toy Story movie in the future. For now, this is Adam Decker, signing off.
